OK, you’re exhausted and have started giving your baby solids in the hope their sleep will improve. Everyone is telling you that if you can get food into your baby, he or she will sleep longer. So tempting, right? You’d do ANYTHING for a bit more sleep!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there is absolutely no evidence to back up the claim that babies sleep better once they start eating solids. In fact, it could even have the opposite effect. Think about how many calories there are in a few spoons of pureed carrot compared to the calorie and protein content of breast milk or formula. Your baby is going to be far fuller and satisfied for longer after drinking milk than having a bit of fruit or veg.

Of course it’s important to introduce our little ones to food but if anyone tells you their baby slept better after eating a bit of carrot for dinner, chances are it was a coincidence and had nothing to do with the carrot!
